🌿 Sonpaan (सोनेपान) – Dussehra Tradition

The golden leaves of prosperity exchanged on Vijayadashami (Dussehra)

🌿 What is “Sonpaan”?

“Sonpaan” = Leaves of the Apta tree (botanical name: Bauhinia racemosa).
On Dussehra, people exchange these leaves saying: “Sone gya, sone dya” (Take gold, give gold).
The leaf is considered as valuable as gold (sona).

📖 Why Do We Give Sonpaan?

  1. Linked to the Golden Deer in Ramayana
According to the Ramayana, Ravana used the trick of a golden deer (Mareech disguised) to abduct Sita. Later, to symbolize the illusion of gold and to remind people not to run after false wealth, Apta leaves were exchanged as symbolic “gold.”
  2. Pandavas’ Story (Mahabharata)
During their exile, the Pandavas hid their weapons inside a Shami (Banni) tree. On Vijayadashami, they retrieved the weapons and went to war, eventually winning Kurukshetra. Since then, Shami/Apta leaves are worshipped as a symbol of victory and prosperity.
  3. Worship of Shami Tree
Shami tree is considered sacred in Hinduism. On Dussehra, people worship the tree and then exchange its leaves as a blessing of prosperity, wealth, and good fortune.
  4. Symbol of Prosperity & Unity
In ancient times, gold was rare. So, people used Apta leaves (which look golden yellow in autumn) as a symbolic gift of wealth. Exchanging leaves also strengthened community bonding, wishing each other prosperity.

🌼 Belief Behind Giving Sonpaan

It is believed that whoever gives or receives Sonpaan on Dussehra will be blessed with wealth and success in the coming year.

🌼 Ritual Today

After puja of the Shami tree, weapons, and vehicles, people pluck some Apta leaves.
They visit relatives, neighbors, and friends and exchange the leaves while saying blessings like:

  • “Sone gya, sone dya” (Take gold, give gold)
  • “Vijayadashami cha shubhechha” (Greetings of victory day)

👉 In short: Sonpaan (Apta leaves) symbolizes gold, prosperity, blessings, and the victory of good over evil, carrying forward traditions from Ramayana, Mahabharata, and Shami tree worship.
